I built all new drawers to replace the crude, stapled-together existing drawers. The new drawers are joined like this (a box, or finger, joint) at all four corners. All the old drawers left over 5 inches of unused air space at the back, so we gained a significant amount of storage with the new drawers that use all the available space.
I also eliminated all the shelves in the lower cabinets, replacing them with either regular drawers or slide-out cabinet arrangements. No more spelunking on our knees into the dark depths!
It's really a huge improvement, if I do say so myself. All the new drawer are mounted with hidden Hettich soft-close self-closing undermount slides. These are quite nice; when the drawer is within about 1 1/2 inches of being closed, it softly pulls itself closed the rest of the way. Very easy to get used to!
